What You Can Do

Because Colorado’s Pre-K to 12th grade public schools is about 36-38% of the state’s General Fund spending, when the JBC (Joint Budget Committee), the Governor, or General Assembly talk about cutting state spending, our schools take the biggest hit.   As is also evidenced by the fact that when legislators reconvene next week, their priority will be the Long Bill and the School Finance Act (plus, SFA is a constitutional obligation

This most recent article by Jenny Brundin of Colorado Public Radio, Colorado School Districts Look to Trim Millions, Meaning Less Pay, Possibly Fewer Schools and Fewer School Days, lays out the harsh reality of what our schools, teachers and staff will be facing as we move deeper into this recession.

As a result, we have had many folks reach out to us asking

What Can I Do?

Here’s our list:

If you are reading this post, then you are well aware of the huge budget crisis we are entering.   Please help others in your circle to understand what these unprecedented budget cuts will look like.   Share our information and share information from Jeffco PTA, share info posted by the school district, and school board members.

Understanding the magnitude of these cuts.   These are big numbers – we’ve been saying “on par with the Great Recession”, but we honestly believe it will be even worse.  We have provided a comparison of the Great Recession cuts to 2020/21 and invite you to share it.  http://www.supportjeffcokids.org/great-recession-cuts-comparison/

Jeffco School Board members and our school district leadership need to hear your voice.  They will be making some of the most important decisions of their lifetime.  Please jump at every opportunity the district and board members offer you to learn about the district’s budget process and when asked, provide your input.   The School Board’s May 7th meeting can be live-streamed here: https://go.boarddocs.com/co/jeffco/Board.nsf/Public

Support Jeffco Kids has endorsed and will be working to support the Fair Tax Colorado Initiative #271. http://www.supportjeffcokids.org/support-jeffco-kids-endorses-fair-tax-colorado-initiative-271/

We need help with petitions and signature collection.

  • We have over 100 petitions in hand now we will need to sign out and use for signature collection in order to get on the ballot.
  • As the folks from Fair Tax Colorado prepare to safely collect signatures, we will continue to provide more information.

If you want to help with this effort, contact us at petition@supportjeffcokids.org

Go to Fair Tax Colorado website and endorse the initiative here:https://fairtaxcolorado-publiceducationvoter.nationbuilder.com/ftc_endorsements

Share the Fair Tax Colorado Calculator here:  https://fairtaxcolorado.org/taxcalculator/

Don’t forget to contact your legislators and local elected officials.

  • Ask them to endorse Fair Tax Colorado Initiative #271
  • Ask what they plan to do to help get this on the ballot.
  • When visiting with your Jeffco legislators, please ask them to make sure they share with their constituents the impact of these budget cuts on our schools at any Town Hall or other events they host.

This is an emotional issue for many of us.  Jobs are at stake, livelihoods are at stake, and our children’s futures are at stake – but regardless, let’s remember to be respectful when talking with our elected officials.

“They say, if you want to know what a community values, look at how its children are treated.  If you want a sense of what a community hopes for the future, look at how it values its schools.”
