The discussion on after school programs and free and reduced lunch programs for students is a bit stunning. While no one loves taxes, most understand why they are necessary and that many needed programs are funded by taxpayers. That’s how our government functions.
Here’s the first part of the quote by White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney “They’re supposed to help kids who don’t get fed at home get fed so they do better in school. Guess what? There’s no demonstrable evidence they’re actually doing that. There are no demonstrable evidence to having results, helping kids do better in school.”
A reporter stops him to ask if he means no programs at all are actually helping kids. He stumbles a bit more then defends these actions by saying that they’re not just thinking of those who are needy, instead, they’re focusing on both parties and if they don’t have evidence of it actually helping, they’re thinking of the people who are taxpayers.
So where’s the study to see what is helping? Food helps keep people healthy and even helps to keep them alive. Certainly, anyone who has spent time in a school has witnessed the need of these programs and would happily participate in a study to show everyone what benefits they receive from helping fund these programs by being taxpayers.
At SJK, we’re for kids, this is unethical and disgusting. We support education and our children terribly in this country and this move is over the top. Taking care of our community, the neediest in our community, is indeed a civic obligation. We are so very sad to see words like this from anyone but especially at the White House. Common sense tells us that feeding our children and providing after school educational programs is a benefit to them.
