Time to Advocate for Updated Social Studies Standards

Please testify regarding the social studies academic standards! Parents and teachers (and teachers who are also parents) are especially needed!

At the November meeting, the Colorado State Board of Education received a presentation from the Social Studies Standards Committee on recommended changes to the state social studies standards. The committee’s report can be found here:  https://www.cde.state.co.us/standardsandinstruction/socialstudiesrevisionrecommendationsnov-21.

A major reason for the changes can be found in SB19-1192 which requires an update to the state social studies standards. The act mandates funding instruction in public schools of history and civil government of the United States and Colorado, including but not limited to the history, culture, and social contributions of American Indians, Latinos, African Americans, and Asian Americans; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals within these minority groups; the intersectionality of significant social and cultural features within these communities; and the contributions and persecution of religious minorities.  The full bill can be found at: https://leg.colorado.gov/bills/hb19-1192,

The act also required the creation of a commission that would make initial recommendations to the Department of Education. The 1192 Commission report with recommended changes can be found here https://www.cde.state.co.us/standardsandinstruction/1192commission at the very bottom of the page.

Now starts the time frame to write the State Board of Education in support of the recommended updates to our social studies standards. A single letter can be sent to both the standards revision committee at costandardsrevision@cde.state.co.us and the State Board of Education at state.board@cde.state.co.us. Please note in the letter if you want it entered into public comment and make sure to state if you are an educator, parent or community member.

Some possible talking points:

  • It is time for the social studies standards to be updated with the history, culture, and social contributions of all groups.
  • We want inclusion in our standards.
  • The Standards Revision Committee is made up of statewide experts, many who are also parents.
  • Accept all the recommendations put forth by the Standards Revision Committee.

We encourage parents and teachers to testify on the topic, procedures can be found at http://www.cde.state.co.us/cdeboard/publiccommentguidelines.

Please use your voice and write a letter or sign up to speak!
