Write a letter!

It’s time to write some letters, Jeffco friends! Spend just a few minutes this weekend writing a letter!

Jonna’s letter:

It’s time to restore accountability, transparency and respect to the Jeffco School Board by recalling Ken Witt, John Newkirk and Julie Williams and starting with a clean slate.

I’m a proud Jeffco parent of a RVHS graduate.  I have volunteered in Jeffco at the school level and on district level committees over the last 15 years.

I support the recall because I have a deep appreciation for the truly fine school district Jeffco Schools has been, and through the Board Majority’s complete disregard for for the law, board policies, and community, they have managed to send our schools and district into a downward spiral.

I am appalled by the Board Majority’s  violation of Colorado open meetings laws by making major decisions behind closed doors (like hiring board lawyer Brad Miller); and then hiding $90,000 in legal expenses from the public by redacting.

I have great concerns about the way the board violates its own policies, like introducing a policy at one meeting and failing to wait to vote on it until the next meeting.  The decisions they rush through without public discussion impact our students, schools and district greatly.  This is how they have made important financial decisions that will have a lasting impact on all of our children’s education in Jeffco.   Two quick examples of the impact of their total Lack of Fiscal Accountability:

Earlier this year, the Board Majority committed $15 million of last year’s Underspend (operating funds) to the construction of a new school (600 seats)  in NW Arvada (a Capital fund) that won’t even come close to meeting the needs of the growing population (6,500-7,000 students over 5 years). In doing so, they passed up a proposed motion to set an additional $2 million in Reserves, too.  This is the school the Jeffco Board Majority members who are now being recalled brag about “building without adding debt”. http://www.boarddocs.com/co/jeffco/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=9VCLPH573C3D

Meanwhile, in the September 24th School Board Study Session, when approached by our Safety and Security Executive Director for additional funding because this department had been surviving on a lean staff after making their own cuts to accommodate the budget; a wake up call rang that the $1.8M needed just doesn’t exist.   The district’s already over-extended Security staff (still providing a Gold Standard of Security and Safety) should be a concern for ALL Jeffco parents and there are no dollars to address the needs.  Lean and mean is fine unless you are talking about staffing the folks who will help keep our children safe at school.  http://www.boarddocs.com/co/jeffco/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=A2FQ97670FBB

It’s time to get partisan politics out of the classroom and focus on students by electing a clean the slate of five board members who will work together to improve education for Jeffco students.

Please join me in voting to recall the board majority and to elect Amanda Stevens, Ali Lasell, Brad Rupert, Susan Harmon, and Ron Mitchell. They will restore transparency, respect and accountability to Jeffco Schools and ensure a great education for our students.

It’s important to vote and vote early. Ballots are due in by Nov. 3.

Shawna’s letter:

It’s time to restore accountability, transparency and respect to the Jeffco School Board by recalling Ken Witt, John Newkirk and Julie Williams and starting with a clean slate.

I am the very-involved parent of a 10 year old girl attending Hackberry Hill Elementary School. This past year, our school lost 12 teachers who left for better pay, more respect, and less stress. The extreme loss of staff is true at nearly every Jeffco School. More than 1000 educators left last year.

This Board Majority has violated Colorado open meetings laws by making major decisions behind closed doors (like hiring board lawyer Brad Miller) and their own policies repeatedly: GP-01, GP-02, GP-04, GP-05, GP-07, GP-08, GP-09, GP-11, GP-12, GP-14, GP-17, BSL-01, BSL-02, and BSL-03; and District Policies AC, BBBA, BDG, BE, BEDH, CC, DIF, GBAA, GBC, HA, HC, HH, IGA, JBC, JI, KD, KDA, and KDB. Here’s just ONE instance of many over the past nearly two years, on video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfaE-8hNxiQ&feature=youtu.be

Many other examples are available on the Transparency Jeffco YouTube channel:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAwbTmPf51iYsj2g-McqViw

They have chased off an amazing communications staff with admirable credentials and replaced them with their own PR firm (Novitas Communications) that harasses parents and hired Devan Crean, the Republican “tracker” who got embarrassingly mixed up in the state GOP chairmanship election battle early last month. You’ll recall what Crean said about her work then: “The organization Ellie and I both work for ONLY tracks politicians and policy makers who are left-leaning. We DO NOT track fellow Republicans…”

http://www.supportjeffcokids.org/dan-we-found-all-of-this-is-10-minutes/ – this is an example of staff now being hired for our schools.

It’s time to get partisan politics out of the classroom and focus on students. It’s time to move Jeffco forward by electing five candidates who have pledged to work together to benefit all of Jeffco’s students. I, along with many other recall volunteers, am a registered Republican. This is a non-partisan, non-political community action.

Please join me in voting to recall the board majority and to elect Amanda Stevens, Ali Lasell, Brad Rupert, Susan Harmon, and Ron Mitchell. They will restore transparency, accountability, and treat everyone with respect.

Our 86,000 students deserve better and I am proud to have the opportunity to vote YES on this recall!
