CDE has opened an application process to participate in a READ Plan working group. Applications will be accepted through Friday, August 24.
In the 2018 legislative session, the Colorado General Assembly passed a bill that made changes to the Colorado READ Act including the creation a working group to study the process to create and use READ plans. The working group will be formed under the direction of the Commissioner of Education and will work from the fall of 2018 through early 2019 to study and recommend regulatory or implementation changes to improve the use and effectiveness of individual READ plans. By February 1, 2020, the Commissioner will submit a report of the findings and recommendations from the working group to the State Board and the education committees of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The working group will be comprised of educators in grades K – 3, upper grade teachers, parents, principals, district leaders, and literacy experts. The working group will be selected to represent districts from across the state, including small rural and rural districts, urban and suburban districts. The group will also include educators with expertise in special education (including Dyslexia, significant support needs, and specific learning disabilities) and those with expertise with English Learners (including program types: bilingual, English language development, and dual language).
The working group will be convened virtually in September 2018 and will continue to meet regularly (bi-monthly or quarterly) through December 2019 to complete its work. Working group participants will be provided travel reimbursement and, if applicable, substitute cost reimbursement. The final meeting schedule will be developed once the group convenes in order to respond to the needs of its members.
Please contact Associate Commissioner Melissa Colsman atwith the name, phone number, and email address of the individual(s) you would like to nominate. Also, please direct your nominees to complete the application no later than Friday, August 24. A link to the application is on the READ webpage: . Applicants will be asked to provide a current resume.
The department anticipates announcing the names of the members by September 1, 2018.
Thank you for your participation in this important work!
