This past spring, we were honored by the Jeffco PTA in receiving the Jane Hammond Award for our advocacy work. For anyone who doesn’t understand the vast child advocacy network that PTA emcompasses, it truly is an instrumental organization in advocating for all children collectively.
Jonna and Shawna have both advocated for individuals to join PTA each year. If you don’t have a PTA at your school or that local unit is not working on advocacy, you should join Jeffco PTA or Colorado PTA to ensure your voice for children is included and you are able to easily join in the important work that happens through PTA.
For years, PTA has been instrumental in helping to share factual information about needed mill and bond campaigns in districts, ballot issues like Colorado Priorities, and advocating at the Capitol. Members join in working together for school issues, district issues, state-wide issues, as well as National issues. Collectively, we have a very strong voice when we work together through PTA. This happens to be exactly what Colorado kids need – everyone must participate.
From National PTA – As the largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the nation, National PTA is the conscience of the country for children and youth issues. Through advocacy, as well as family and community education, National PTA has established programs and called for legislation that improves our children’s lives, such as:
- Creation of Kindergarten classes
- Child labor laws
- Public health service
- Hot and healthy lunch programs
- Juvenile justice system
- Mandatory immunization
- Arts in Education
- School Safety
PTA is not just for people who have children in schools. PTA is not about volunteering in classrooms or baking cookies or fundraising.
PTA IS for everyone who cares about children and wants to help advocate for all Colorado children.

As a community with a mill and bond on the November ballot and as a state desperately needing elected officials who support public education, everyone needs to add their voices to PTA and join.
