On the heels of the recall announcement, another follows. See Board Member Jill Fellman’s Facebook post to the community below.
Today I am announcing with regret that I will not seek a second term on the Jefferson County Board of Education. This decision has been a difficult one, coming after months of reflection. While I have dedicated the biggest part of my life to Jeffco Schools and my loyalties will never wane, I also have to consider some personal priorities and do what’s best at this time for my family.
I am a proud product of Jeffco Schools. I spent 30 years as a teacher and administrator in Jeffco. My passion has always been working with Jeffco students, their families and District staff to provide the best education, every day, for every one of our unique and extraordinary students. That passion led me to serve on the School Board, to advocate for all Jeffco students and families, and for all of our employees who are so dedicated to our children.
I was never a politician, nor did I want to be one. My goals have been focused on providing our children with the highest quality education in every part of Jefferson County, by working within the Board’s established policies, and by practicing collaboration, respect, strong fiscal management, accountability, transparency and long-range planning. I’ve also tried to promote compromise, because in a District this diverse, we often have differences of opinion. Sadly, the Board’s current leadership neither shares these goals nor pursues these practices. Consequently, I believe the Board has failed to focus on what is best for our children’s education.
During the past five months, as I have continued to advocate for Jeffco Schools, I have also faced some challenging medical issues. Fortunately, everything appears to have resolved itself favorably. But this medical experience has reminded me of the importance of taking time to pursue all of one’s dreams, without letting the pursuit of a single dream become all-consuming. I will always advocate passionately for Jeffco students, their families, and the wonderful District employees who work so hard on our behalf. Now, however, it is time for another advocate to take the reigns on the Board.
I could not have done the work of a School Board member without the tremendous support of so many Jeffco families, Jeffco teachers, administrators and support staff. I am deeply humbled and incredibly grateful for all you have done, as we have worked together in support of a great educational experience for our children. As a Board member, I pledge to continue our work together until the end of my term in November. Afterward, as a former Board member, I will maintain my loyalties to Jeffco and I will continue to advocate for quality education in our community.
A note to both Ms. Fellman and Ms. Dahlkemper from Support Jeffco Kids: We appreciate your tremendous bravery and the passion you have shared for all kids in Jeffco, upholding promises to voters, showing true accountability to the community and commitment to the very strong tradition of excellence that Jeffco Schools was previously recognized for across the country. We wish you both well and thank you for your service to our community.
Support Jeffco Kids will be announcing endorsements for candidates who support public education for ALL 86,000 Jeffco kids at a later date. Stay tuned and get involved!
