Call To Action, Deadline Friday, January 3rd

Call to Action –

The Interim Legislative Committee on School Finance has draft legislation to rewrite the School Finance Formula that they will be reviewing and voting on next week.

They are taking public comment online.
The deadline is Friday, Jan 3rd to provide input through the survey.

There are still many unknowns about the formula (because no numbers have been inserted into the blanks), but for now, a key issue is the lack of language in the draft to insure public dollars stay in public schools.

It’s important to let the Committee know that public funds must only be used to support public schools.

While you might think it’s not necessary to emphasize the public funds for public schools, our Legislative Chair sat in the session when Representative Shannon Bird proposed the language, and it was questioned by another member of the committee. We cannot afford to leave anything to chance.

Here’s a link to the draft language:

For your reference, here is Support Jeffco Kid’s comment on the survey:

It is vital that public school funds only be used to support public schools. Representative Shannon Bird has introduced language that would make sure this bill leaves nothing to question.

“Money appropriated pursuant to this section shall be expended to support only public schools, except that money appropriated pursuant to this section may be expended otherwise as required pursuant to an Individualized Education Program under the federal “Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004”, 20 U.S.C. Sec. 1400 ET SEQ., as amended, or any successor act.”

I strongly urge the Committee to incorporate Representative Bird’s language so the bill is specific:  public funds must only be used to support public schools.
