During the 2013 election, we saw a few Catholic Churches that allowed political handouts to be put into the pews at churches. Those mailer-type handouts included candidates in Dougco AND WNW aka the BOE3 being recalled, Witt, Newkirk and Williams. A friend from Dougco was appalled and sent us a copy after they had contacted their Priest who told her that if she didn’t like it, she should contact the Archdiocese. As a Catholic myself, I was deeply offended and shocked. Thankfully, MY Priest said he would never do such a thing!
Well, it’s now 2015 and we bring this up because…churches in Jeffco are now receiving pleas from Jeffco Students First, asking them to mislead their parishioners by sending them false and misleading information.
Here’s the text:firstname.lastname@example.org Dear Pastor, Our Christian values are under attack and right here in Jefferson County, Planned Parenthood Votes is working to influence our school board election. You may have heard about the recent attempt to recall three Jefferson County school board members. The recall proponents want to replace them with new school board members. Planned Parenthood Votes has sent emails encouraging their supporters to work for and support the recall of these school board members and is backing replacement candidates. It is concerning to us that Planned Parenthood sells a pregnancy prevention kit to our schools that includes a dummy version of the Plan B pill and literature which mentions nothing about the abortion causing properties of this pill. We are unsure whether this is the primary motivation of Planned Parenthood Votes in actively supporting the recall of the current school board majority members.
Our note: This is blatantly false information! Additionally, sending an email on July 23 and another on September 27th is NOT active participation. JSF has even tried to claim that Planned Parenthood gave money to the recall – this is FALSE!
- You can delete this email.
- You can tell a few friends and do nothing more.
- You can let your congregation know that Planned Parenthood Votes supports the recall of our school board and the implications for our Christian Values if the recall succeeds.
Now, let’s first point out that many pro-recall people happen to be religious and go to church regularly. To act as if this is an attack on “Christian Values” is actually an attack on many who have and adhere to Christian Values. Certainly the many religious leaders who contacted us understand this.
Secondly, let’s point out that churches may not engage in political campaign activity or they could be in danger of losing tax-exempt status. Publication 1828 states “…churches and religious organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office.”
Here is the link to that publication: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p1828.pdf
Putting our churches in this position is blatantly inappropriate and breaking the 9th “Thou shalt not lie” Commandment.
This statement in their letter above is completely and blatantly false – “It is concerning to us that Planned Parenthood sells a pregnancy prevention kit to our schools that includes a dummy version of the Plan B pill and literature which mentions nothing about the abortion causing properties of this pill. We are unsure whether this is the primary motivation of Planned Parenthood Votes in actively supporting the recall of the current school board majority members.”
This statement in their letter above is abusively misleading and anyone who would believe this without researching, let alone repeat such nonsense should take a class in critical thinking. – “Could it be that Planned Parenthood sees sex education as a way of teaching our children values, which include acceptance of abortion and other beliefs that are in direct opposition to our Christian values?”
