The Kiwanis Club of Alameda West has long supported The Action Center helping to supply backpacks stuffed with school supplies for needy Jefferson County students as they begin school each fall.
From August 8th – 13th, 2016, The Action Center, with help from many volunteers, including the Kiwanis Club of Alameda West, distributed basic school supplies for approximately 6,000 Jeffco students and families in desperate need of this help and support.
Students of low-income or homeless families in Jefferson County do benefit greatly from this very worthy program. The average cost of providing $93 per student for new school supplies can totally overwhelm families with multiple kids in school. These parents are working on very thin budgets and wish to provide the best opportunity for their kids to succeed in school without cutting into their grocery bill, utility bill, or rent money.
You might not believe the level of need of students in our Jeffco Schools. During the 2014-15 school year, there were 2,756 homeless students in Jeffco! That means these students are living out of a motel, a parent’s car, or with other family members. You may also not know that one out of every three students – that’s a whopping 33% – of Jeffco kids are now on the free-and-reduced lunch program.
The Action Center is a human-service non-profit organization that offers the single-most comprehensive range of services to struggling residents of Jefferson County and the homeless. They meet the immediate needs for their clients, treating them with respect and dignity. Then, they provide clients with the resources needed to develop pathways to self-sufficiency, breaking the cycle of poverty. You can learn about their services and ways to get involved by coming on a tour, visiting www.theactioncenterco.org or by contacting Jill Messinger at 720.407.6686.
This program fits nicely with our Kiwanis Motto: “Serving the Children of the World.” If you would like to join this very active, hard working and fun loving Kiwanis Club, we encourage you to be our guest at our weekly meeting. The Club meets at 7:00 a.m. at the I-HOP Restaurant in Lakewood City Commons located at 389 S. Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood, CO 80226.
