A Bothersome Email and Concern for Transparency, Again

To make things clear, all content from SJK is purple.  We are in receipt of the following email and screen shots from an individual who received correspondence from an elected Jeffco Schools Board of Education Director conducting business (again) via personal vehicles rather than through appropriate resources via jeffco.k12.co.us.  We think it’s time to shine a light on transparency and submit a CORA request to find out what other Jeffco Schools Board business is being conducted privately.  Anyone can do this – submit the online form here:

The letter:

I am bothered and upset.  I voted for the 3 majority members of the Jeffco Board of Education.  I thought that maybe with individuals who are more conservative, our kids would get more bang for our buck.  I thought that there would be a better balance on the school board and maybe I could get more services for my 3 kids and get rid of bus fees and other fees that hurt the bank accounts of so many people.

After watching what I voted for the past several months and hoping things would get better, I just received another email from “Julie for Jeffco.”  I am forwarding this to you and asking you to make this public.  I am also taking screen shots to prove this is the email in original state as received.  This is not what I voted for and I have a child in AP U.S. History.  I am scared that this will not be available to my two other children.  I also am opposed to removing health education from the curriculum as my sister works in the medical field.  I am scared to say anything because I am a part of the conservative community and don’t want our business impacted.

Board business conducted in private:

Hello,

At tonight’s Jeffco School Board meeting I am requesting to have a Board Committee for curriculum review. We need folks who are interested to please contact me at:

Board Committee for Curriculum Review

The committee shall be seated by the Board.  Each director may nominated up to three candidates for the committee and the entire board then will vote to select the nine (9) members of the committee. The charge to the committee is to review curricular choices for conformity to JeffCo academic standards, accuracy and omissions, and to inform the board of any objectionable materials.  The committee shall regularly review texts and curriculum according to priorities that it establishes, however, at any time, the Board may add items to the list for review.  The committee shall report all comments (majority and minority) to the board in writing on a weekly basis as items are reviewed.  Board members may move for discussion or action on items reported when matters warrant public discussion or action.  The committee’s initial projects will be a review of the AP US History curriculum and elementary health curriculum.

Review criteria shall include the following:  instructional materials should present the most current factual information accurately and objectively.  Theories should be distinguished from fact.  Materials should promote citizenship, patriotism, essentials and benefits of the free enterprise system, respect for authority and respect for individual rights.  Materials should not encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law.  Instructional materials should present positive aspects of the United States and its heritage.  Content pertaining to political and social movements in history should present balanced and factual treatment of the positions.

Thank you so much for your support!

Clearly the Board Meeting is tomorrow night, this is an error.  Another interesting editorial note:  Each board member will nominate 3 individuals (that’s a total of 15 individuals.)  When the committee is limited to 9 individuals, the 3 majority board members can ensure that ONLY their own candidates will serve on the committee.  Not very representative of the entire Jeffco community representing 85,000 children.

If YOU want to email the Board of Education Members, here’s the proper way to do so, click on the name and you’ll find individual email addresses or you can email board@jeffco.k12.co.us
