Pleasant View & Welchester Answers

With Pleasant View closing, there are so many questions. In any school community, there are future children who are not yet in our schools who don’t have access to information like those families already attending the school.

Welchester is one of the schools that children previously at Pleasant View will attend. Thankfully, the principal there is doing what she can to communicate to families and answer questions while also creating a welcoming atmosphere. We are sharing the information a community member sent to us in hopes of reaching those who are not connected but want and need information.

Dear Welchester Parents and Guardians,

On February 9th, the Jeffco Board of Education voted to close Pleasant View Elementary School next year. Some of the Pleasant View students will be reassigned to our school and some to Shelton. Following is Q and A of anticipated questions which will hopefully answer some of the questions and concerns you may have at this time. Some don’t have definitive answers but I want you to know that we are working on them. I will let you know more as I know more.

Q: EXACTLY how many more students does this mean for Welchester for the 17-18 school year?

A: At this time, we are looking at approximately 60-70 students (about 10 per grade level). Until we receive the intention forms from parents from Welchester and Pleasant View, we do not have an exact figure. We are hoping to have this finalized in March. Please complete the Welchester Intention Form as this will help us plan our numbers. One will come home in Friday Folder’s.

Q: Are you accepting choice students at this time?

A: We will not accept choice students UNTIL we have gone through the process of finalizing numbers for students currently at Welchester and those coming from Pleasant View. We are hoping to have this finalized in March. Depending upon our numbers, we may not be able to accept any choice students. Please complete the Welchester Intention Form as this will help us plan our numbers.

Q: Will the class sizes increase?

A: Most likely, class sizes will increase by several students in each class. As it stands right now, grade levels can absorb anywhere between 5-15 students and still be in the 25 student range. Next year, we have the room to add another class or two if the numbers are extremely high in a grade. We won’t know this for sure until we know the numbers at specific grade levels.

Q: Will we have temporary buildings?

A: At this time, we have not discussed adding temporary buildings to our site.

Q: When might Welchester sixth grade move to Bell Middle School (making the elementary school K-5 and the middle school 6-8)?

A: The current proposal is for the 2018-2019 school year.

Q: Will we continue to have preschool at Welchester?

A: The district is looking at options of where to house the preschool from Pleasant View. At this time, we anticipate adding a second classroom.

Q: Will we expand the parking lot to accommodate more cars?

A: I realize parking is an issue already and adding more families can make it even more challenging. However, if we streamline our pick up, I am confident it will be easily accommodated.

Q: How will adding more students to Welchester affect the SBB process?

A: The district has promised more mental health support for Welchester from one year as a result of moving students from Pleasant View. We will also be eligible again for Title 1 funding. In addition, we may be able to keep a few more of our teachers and supporting staff as a result of increased enrollment. More resources will be available for all students.

Q: What are your plans with community outreach?

A: I am currently in the process of discussing with our district and school leaders how we can ensure a seamless and effective transition for students while providing a positive welcoming environment. An Open House, a Welcome Night and parent meetings will be scheduled sometime in March and April. Once we decide on specific dates and times, I will let you know. Our PTA, SAC, Golden Schools Foundation, and a multitude of parents have already begun brainstorming ways to help with the transition.

I hope you will join me in warmly welcoming Pleasant View students to our community. I will be talking to classrooms to share the news as well as get student ideas on how to welcome our new friends. I think our community will only grow stronger and I am excited about the new opportunities this will bring to our school. Our theme for this transition is “Friends we haven’t yet met.”

As always, thank you for being so supportive of our amazing school. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Warmly,
Bethany Robinson
Principal
