Support Jeffco Kids
Candidate Endorsement Questionnaire
At Support Jeffco Kids (SJK), our mission is about public education, supporting public education in Jeffco and in the state of Colorado as it impacts our local school district and students.
We know, what happens under the dome of our Capitol can have a negative impact or a positive impact on our schools and students. The same is true for local elections. That’s why we are interested in understanding what your position is on some of these major educational issues. We also know actions speak louder than words.
Tax Credits and Vouchers. This year, SB 154 to provide tax credits for parents who pay private school tuition and donors who fund private school scholarships was postponed indefinitely in House Education; and the Douglas County School Board resurrected their Choice Scholarship program the country’s first district-created, nearly universal school voucher program.
We’d like to know what your position is on Tax Credits and Vouchers/Choice Scholarships and when or if you would support legislation to implement either in Colorado.
Mandated Charter School Mill Levy Override Equalization. SB 188 would have mandated all Colorado school districts equitably share mill levy override revenues with their charter schools. And twice this last legislative session the transparency and accountability within which these public schools should operate was at issue.
Please tell us what your position is on charter/district revenue sharing, as well as your position on waivers and transparent operation.
What do you think needs to happen at the state level to address this issue?
School Safety and Safe2Tell. Senate Bill 14-002, incorporated Safe2Tell® under the Colorado Office of the Attorney General and provided funding to ensure that the Safe2Tell® reporting tip line, trainings, and education and awareness efforts are available to Colorado students, schools, and communities. This year, the Governor signed SB 16-193 Safe2Tell to Provide Free Materials and Training into law, but not without a fight. We believe School Safety encompasses much more than the Safe2Tell program, and should be a priority. Please share with us your concerns regarding School Safety.
Public School Funding. We all know about the Negative Factor and what it does to school district budgets. If the Colorado Priorities group is able to get Prop 117 on the ballot, that may help, but it won’t be the answer. What do you think Colorado needs to do to address this issue?
Tell us anything else you’d like us to know about you! Especially those items that pertain to public education and how you’ve been involved and shown support!
Please feel free to contact us with any requests or questions! Email your responses to email@example.com – while we won’t be posting the responses of candidates we endorse, we may choose a sentence or two that shows you Support Jeffco Kids!
Our mission is to educate the Jeffco Community on the importance of supporting public education for ALL kids in Jeffco, inform the community on current events, and to support a school board that understands the importance of educating all 86,000 students in Jeffco.
