The Board has taken no action!

In response to many friends of Support Jeffco Kids, Board Member Dahlkemper advocates for the Board to, finally, DO SOMETHING!  See the emails below!

Great quote as well –

It’s unclear to me why we continue to put students, families and school communities on hold. I’m hopeful we’re not dragging this out only to see a “surprise” facilities plan crafted by a board member at the May 14 meeting. We’ve already had enough surprises and stirred up enough anxiety in the Everitt, Maple Grove, and Manning communities with our last boondoggle. Let’s not make the same mistake again.

Subject: Overcrowding in Schools + Consent Agenda

Hi, Board –

Jill Fellman and I respectfully request that the board add an item to this Thursday’s meeting agenda about facilities issues to revisit and resolve the rapid growth and overcrowding in northwest Jeffco and the Lakewood/Rooney Ranch area so that we have a short-term and a long-term plan.

The board has received multiple presentations since August 2014 and several PPTs from district leaders, including COO Steve Bell and Tim Reed.

Yet, the board has taken no action, provided no leadership, or even given any indication of next steps – leaving students and families in a lurch.

We have received several emails and calls in the last two days from parents asking that the board address these issues immediately. I’m copying the constituents who have contacted us so they are aware that we have made this request. I will forward their emails to Helen as well. Some have contacted us by phone.

I also request that we take 6.05 Boundary Modifications and 6.06 Surplus Property off the consent agenda.

Thank you!

Les

After this email, Ms. Dahlkemper is surprised that the item has been added to the May 14th meeting following an “Agenda Prep Meeting” in an email from Chief of Staff (see that email at the bottom.)  May 14th?  Really?  Why bother dealing with it at all, it’s only our children who are impacted in huge classes.  Wonder who is invited to the “Agenda Prep Meeting”?

Helen, thanks so much for providing this new information. I appreciate it.

Board members, waiting until May is unacceptable. (What’s more, WHY would we schedule this discussion during a meeting when there’s NO public comment?) Communities are left in limbo as they wait for leadership and direction from this board on how we will address school overcrowding to ensure our students have a safe, comfortable learning environment.

We have received several PPTs and presentations since August 2014. District leadership has presented multiple options for the board’s consideration – and, often, in response to board questions and concerns.

However, the board continues to ignore parents’ concerns about overcrowding and refuses to give any indication of direction for the short-term and long-term regarding facilities. We have in our hands the information, data and resources to make a well-informed decision. If we need more information, please share what you need to know with the entire board.

Instead, let’s work together as a five-member board to address this pressing issue on Thursday and on May 7, if needed.

I, again, respectfully request that the board place this issue on Thursday’s

agenda.

Thank you, in advance, for your

consideration.

Best,

Les

– after yesterday’s agenda prep meeting a Facilities Planning topic was added to the May 14 meeting for 45 minutes.  The updated 3/30 Board Work Calendar (for discussion at the April 2 meeting) is attached to the meeting agenda.

Thanks,

Helen
